The Mornington Peninsula is one of Australia's premier wine districts. The Peninsula boasts many award winning wines produced by wineries established amongst some of the area's most magnificent coastal and rural settings. Touring the wineries of the Morningon Peninsula is a truly memorable experience.
Spectacular scenery, elegant cool climate wines and delicious gourmet food - the Mornington Peninsula has it all. There are over 100 vineyards on the Peninsula, Australia's most beautiful wine growing area. After over a century of wine growing on the Peninsula, the renaissance of the region's wine industry began in 1972 when a number of aspiring vignerons independently recognised the potential of the unique maritime climate of the Mornington Peninsula for producing high quality cool climate varieties, similar to those of the great wine producing regions of France. The maritime influence provides relatively high summer humidity and rainfall. The coincidence of late ripening and a prolonged gentle autumn, result in fully ripe grapes with outstanding fruit flavours, high natural acidity and fine tannins.
The main grape varieties grown in the Region are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Some of the more innovative plantings include Pinot Gris, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Woodman Estate enjoys a special relationship with a number of the area's finest wineries and can organise a memorable cellar door visit on your behalf. Wineries not to be missed include -
